To Many Chips

I love Saturdays. Especially when we don't have any plans, don't have any objectives for the day and just hang out. It was day two for me with my parents in town and I'm reminded of how much I love spending time with them. While I have appreciated my parents all my life, it's only been recently that I've noticed how great they really are.

Tonight we celebrated my birthday (while not officially until Monday). I've always loved to cook so I requested that I get to make my own birthday dinner. Carey was kind enough to let me. So, it was burgers, veggies and baked beans tonight. It wasn't warm out, but the evening was calm and it was great to be outside. We feasted on grilled food and then finished it up with homemade ice cream cake!

Lately, Cooper has been very conscious of healthy eating, exercise, etc. It could be because we are constantly telling him he needs to put healthy foods in his body and avoid 'junk food'. Cooper could eat nothing but chocolate and never get sick of it. Just like his mother. =) (Miles on the other hand, more like me - would much rather have chips!) Speaking of chips, during dinner, Grandpa got up for seconds and added a handful of potato chips to his plate. Cooper says 'Grandpa! That's a lot of chips! You are going to get fat! Fat! Fat! Fat!'

While we reprimanded him for being rude to Grandpa, we're all laughing on the inside...

Returning Home

Earlier today, I wrote about how the boys say things that make me smile, laugh and wonder what's actually going on in their little heads. My mom and dad are in town, visiting from Enid, and mom had a classic story to tell about Cooper when I returned home this afternoon (he's not going to appreciate me writing about this when he grows up...). While mom had two boys, I think she may have been out of practice and not quite ready for what happened next. Cooper was sitting on the 'big boy potty seat' on the toilet. He then started flipping his penis up and down. And then, laughing, he says 'Grandma, did you used to flick your penis?!'

You've just got to love boys!!

Blogging from 34,000 feet

My scenery while I write this blog is a bit different than in the past. When I look to my right, I see a stranger sleeping, his arm invading his chair-mate's space (and said chair-mate is not real excited about it). To my left, I see the wing of my jet, a clear blue sky and a beautiful sunrise. The pilot just announced that we're cruising at around 34,000 feet, and approximately half-way from Richmond, VA to Dallas, TX.

Technology seems to be an added pain in many instances, but Wi-Fi on a jet takes a little bit of the sting away! I've had many flights now where American has outfitted their planes with Internet access and it's such a nice addition. It's a great time to get caught up on work, email with friends, and blog!

I don't have any new and exciting stories from this trip as it was pretty short. I've been gone just over 24 hours, with the entire purpose of my trip being dinner with a client in Richmond. I met two of our venture capital partners (one from NYC, one from Columbia, SC) and those two always add an interesting twist to dinner. This was my second trip to Richmond, but first time to stay downtown. It's neat to see the history of Richmond - lots of great architecture has been preserved. I stayed at The Jefferson hotel, which is a treat if you ever get the chance.

Wednesday night, before I left, I was putting Cooper to bed with a book about a mama bear looking for her cub. The mama bear looks in many different places and on the final page, finds her cub and takes her home. The last image of the book has the mama bear carrying the cub in her mouth (picture mama biting the neck of the cub) and Cooper burst out laughing. He then says 'Daddy, isn't that the funniest thing you've ever seen? Shouldn't we just laugh all day? Yes, I think we should laugh through the night time, through breakfast, lunch and dinner!' Being on the road makes me appreciate many things about being home - at the top of that list, I miss the crazy things our kids do and say that get me laughing. I miss you boys and I'll be home soon!

Lunch with Cooper (or lack thereof)

As some of you know, Cooper is not a big fan of eating. There isn't much he likes and would generally prefer to do anything to get out of lunch or dinner. Just for fun, I wrote down some of his delay tactics from lunch.

Can I have whole cheese crackers?
Will you help me eat?
I have a hang nail – can you cut it?
I don’t have any room in my tummy.
I’m full.
Looking at his plate - I don’t like this food!
I want some bread.
I think I need some more dip.
I have to go pee.
I have to go poop!
I think I need to take some pills.
It’s dangerous for me to not take any pills.
I’m not feeling very well.
I think this is junk food for me.

Meanwhile, across the table, Miles has eaten two entire plates of food and is still going…

Yes! (or Yesh)

Over the weekend, something happened. Something big. Prior to the weekend, if you asked Miles a question where the answer should be 'yes', he would answer 'no'. Not because he didn't want or like something, but because his 'yes' was 'no'. For example:
Me (Nate) - "Miles, do you like candy?"
Miles - "No!" (often while dancing and shaking his head up and down - so cute)

But after this weekend, that cute little 'no' dance has changed. He now says "Yesh" in this most adorable little way. He was hanging out with me tonight and I caught a few of them on video.

No more diapers for Miles!

Okay, okay, that's not entirely true. In fact, we're a long ways away from no more diapers for Miles! HOWEVER, we are beginning to have hope that this day will eventually come! With the help of Cooper, Miles has had a sudden urge to sit on the potty and has really started to figure out what to do. I'm not sure Carey or I are really ready to go full-speed into potty training mode, but with Miles telling us he's got to go and with many successful trips every day, I think we may be getting close. And, with every dirty diaper I change, more motivation comes with it! Miles is doing great and we're all excited about the day when there truely are no more diapers!

Every day seems to bring new changes with Miles. He's constantly adding new words to his vocabulary and learning how to do new things. He has really started to enjoy reading books, especially if there are kitties, cars, or trucks in them. He is in love with kitties. He has a great 'meow' to go with them. =)

With the weather turning a bit warmer, we are all excited to spend more time outside. We haven't had a heat wave come through, but temps in the 40s feel so wonderful. Carey continues to run on a regular basis (logging about 7 miles every morning) and I've been attempting to get 1.5-2 hours on the trainer 4-5 times per week. What I would do without Netflix...no one knows. I was in Toronto last week and came home with a diagnoses of Pleurisy, which has not been fun. It appears the chest / joint pain is getting better and I'm headed out this afternoon with John for a few hours on the bike.

President's Day

Things were pretty low-key around the Bethell house on Monday, President's Day. It was a company holiday at Duck Creek, but Carey and I both found the opportunity to work. Carey put in her time in the morning and I spent some time during the afternoon / evening. I've struggled to take time away from the job, but I know I really need to in 2010. Plus, I've got 9 weeks of vacation... Regardless, it was great to spend the AM with boys.

This evening, our small group came over for about 1.5 hours. We're doing a study by Andy Stanley covering basic topics, but they are great to think about. After small group, Richie showed Cooper a few things on the guitar and by the look of Coopers face while watching, Richie is a legitimate rock star. He was grinning from ear to ear. It was so cute to see him get excited (granted, I could listen to Richie play all night - he is so talented).

The rest of the week looks to be pretty standard. I'm in town and looking forward to the extra time with the family. It's always great to be home.

Last night, Elizabeth came over to take care of Cooper and Miles while Nate and I enjoyed a Valentine's Date to Springfield. I was filling my ice water as we were getting ready to leave. Cooper said, "Miss Elizabeth?" I looked over at him to listen to what he was going to say. He looked at me and said, "Hey Mommy? You need to concentrate on what you're doing. I'm talking to Miss Elizabeth."

The Tick Tack of Rain

Me: Cooper - do your ears hurt?
Coop: No
Me: Have you noticed that you have been having a hard time hearing?
Coop: No, not really. I can hear the tick tack of the rain on the ground. Mom - do you hear it?

A Story From The Road

For all of you looking for super-cute stories of our adorable boys...you may want to close the browser and wait for another post. =) I haven't posted many personal stories on the blog, but this week I encountered an experience I thought others may enjoy (especially if you knew us when we were first married).

As many of you know, I travel frequently for the company I work for. My travel takes me all over North America and as you can imagine, there are drastic differences to the experiences found in each place. For example, in Alaska, I went for an early-morning jog and later found out from my client that wasn’t the smartest thing to do. Evidently Wolves and Grizzly bears frequent the edge of the city. In Hawaii, I’ve found the culture to be very family-friendly and have been invited into the homes of my clients, experiencing the Islands as a local. And speaking of family friendly, there is New York… I’m convinced they eat their young. Okay, okay, that’s probably a bit harsh – my apologies to all the New Yorkers reading our blog.

With all the travel I do, I’ve been looking for some way to keep track of the places I’ve been. I’m not really sure why, but for me, there is a certain appeal of being able to tell my kids stories of where I’ve been and hoping that logging those locations will bring back the stories. I often take for granted the experiences I have on the road, and with just under 800,000 air-miles on American Airlines alone, I have a lot of stories! I’ve heard of many ideas on how to chronicle my travels: marking every city with a pin on a map, magnets, coffee mugs, card decks, postcards, etc. However, I’ve decided I’m going to journal. So, the story below will mark my first entry of 2010.

Carey and I spent the first few years of our marriage in a tiny, one-bedroom apartment in Bolivar. We had no money, school and work was tough, but we have good memories of the apartment and life as newlyweds. With one exception. Our neighbors cooked every night and I swear they used a half-pound of curry with every dish. We decided the neighboring apartment’s fan over the oven must have eventually connected with ours because we could always smell it. We could smell it so strongly it was like a curry-fog in the Bethell apartment. After a few years of that smell, I learned to hate the smell of curry.

Last night I was in Richmond, VA visiting a client. After a long day of travel and grabbing a burger and fries at Five Guys (a must if you ever have the chance), I check into a Marriott Residence Inn. Generally, the Residence Inn is great – lots of space, small kitchen, and most are newly renovated. This one, however, was not. Old bed, worn out furniture and it had a funny smell. The kind of smell that would have me asking for another room if it hadn’t been the only room left. So I manage. About midnight, I’m in bed and another funny smell begins to come into my room. I can’t tell what it is, but it’s faintly unpleasant. Another thirty minutes goes by and I really smell it now – so strongly I can almost taste it. And then it hits me – that’s CURRY!!! While incredibly unpleasant, I just had to smile. I immediately had thoughts our sweet Indian neighbors, the tiny apartment, and all the other adventures that we had in that phase of life. I realized how thankful I am for what we went through together…and how thankful I am for our house!
